Class of 2009 Welcome

Wednesday, September 3rd

Our 2008-2009 training program officially begins with our 3-day Orientation taking place at our industry-envied, fully equipped, 50,000 square foot Educational Center.

Wednesday, September 3rd
Our Orientation program commences with Registration followed by a formal presentation that will include faculty and staff introductions, along with familiarization with our facilities. Then come some fun surprises to break the ice, help the students get to know each other, and make everyone feel at home. We'll also introduce our new class to some of the highlights we have planned for them during their 10-month journey. Our afternoon session will undoubtedly be filled with inspiration as World-Renowned Documentary Photographer, Mary Ellen Mark, arrives at Hallmark to kick off our prominent Guest Lecturer Series, to share her imagery and passion from her illustrious career.

Thursday, September 4th
Today's morning session focuses on information designed to produce an educational environment and spirit of mutual respect, cooperation and integrity throughout our 10-month training program. The afternoon session features a presentation by Certified Speaking Professional, Eric Chester. As a former teacher and a coach, and author of nine books, Eric has been an invited motivational speaker to more than 1,500 schools where his presentations have made a positive impact on the lives of over 2 million students.

Friday, September 5th
Our final day of Orientation begins with an introduction into the unique educational training process that leads our students to success in the photography and imaging arts field. Our Orientation Week comes to a close with what promises to be an action-packed presentation by Highly Acclaimed Contemporary Lifestyle Photographer, Gary Land.

Friday, June 20th
Join the faculty, staff and alumni of Hallmark, as well as distinguished members of the photographic profession, in honoring the accomplishments of the Class of 2008 in a casual yet professional outdoor setting. Festivities will conclude with a light buffet-style luncheon.

Doctors Without Borders Benefit

Thursday, June 19th

Through June 29th

Students at Hallmark Institute of Photography conduct a print exhibit at the Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography to benefit independent humanitarian aid organization, Doctors Without Borders.

Students generously donated over 600 images for this worthy cause. From this group, 200 juried images will be chosen and professionally printed at 11"x14" for the exhibition, which has its opening on Thursday, June 19th at 1:00pm. Approximately 60 images will be displayed in 20"x24" frames upon the walls of the museum, with the remaining prints arranged for viewing throughout the museum. The students' prints will be sold for $175.00 for a matted and framed image, or shrink-wrapped against board for $95.00. Prints can be picked-up or shipped anywhere in the world. All of the proceeds from the sales of the prints and frames will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. View the exhibit online now!

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries.

Each year, MSF doctors, nurses, logisticians, water-and-sanitation experts, administrators, and other medical and non-medical professionals depart on more than 3,800 field assignments. They work alongside more than 22,500 locally hired staff to provide medical care.

In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF provides health care, rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centers for malnourished children, and offers mental health care. When needed, MSF also constructs wells and dispenses clean drinking water, and provides shelter materials like blankets and plastic sheeting.

Through longer-term programs, MSF treats patients with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness, and HIV/AIDS, and provides medical and psychological care to marginalized groups such as street children.

MSF was founded in 1971 as a nongovernmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and bear witness publicly to the plight of the people it assists. A private nonprofit association, MSF is an international network with sections in 19 countries.

Final Portfolio Review

Through Friday, June 13th.

The Year-end Portfolio Review process represents the culmination of a student's 10-month professional photography training at Hallmark. During the Portfolio Review process, the review panel will critically analyze each individual student portfolio to determine whether or not it possesses the necessary technical and artistic skills that qualify the student for employment in field of professional photography and imaging. Students will receive in-depth commentary from each of the panelists as to the areas of strength and weakness represented in his or her portfolio. Upon successful completion of the year-end portfolio process, the student qualifies for a Certificate of Completion from Hallmark.

Hallmark Institute of Photography is pleased to announce the selection of three world-class photographers to review the year-end student portfolios of the Class of 2008. Iconic portrait and fashion photographer Barbara Bordnick from New York City, passionate photo-documentary photographer Beth Reynolds from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and internationally acclaimed commercial and fashion photographer David Turner from New York City have been chosen to review each individual student portfolio from this year's graduating class. Each of these photographers exemplifies the top of his or her individual imaging disciplines. Hallmark's President, George J. Rosa III states, "We are absolutely thrilled to have access to the caliber of talent, commitment and passion that this year's world-class photographers bring to Hallmark's year-end portfolio review process. I don't know of a better year-end gift we could provide to our students than the opportunity for each of them to have their bodies of work reviewed and commented on by professional photographers with the diverse and exceptional experience of this panel."

Barbara Bordnick is an internationally acclaimed portrait and fashion photographer. Barbara began her career in Copenhagen and Paris creating fashion imagery for the pages of Harpers Bazaar. In 1968, she returned to New York City to open her own studio and begin her forty-year career as one of the first and foremost women photographers in the nation. Her work is part of many permanent collections including the International Center for Photography in New York City, The Gilman Paper Collection in NY, The Polaroid Collection in Cambridge, MA, the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, and the Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography in Turners Falls, MA. She is an adjunct faculty member at the Parson's School of Design, as well as a lecturer and educator at workshops, colleges and conferences around the world. Beth Reynolds is an award-winning photo-documentary photographer who lives and works in St. Petersburg, FL. Her work and life reflect her ongoing desire to not only document and share the people and images around her, but more importantly, she uses this passion, empathy and skill to help those around her. Beth runs a successful publishing company, is the Photography and Digital Coordinator for the Art Center in St. Petersburg, and is a public affairs specialist for the US Coast Guard Reserves. Beth lectures at workshops around the world, has published numerous books and exhibits her work across the country. Beth states, "Documentary photography walks a fine line between empathy and exploitation, between what to shoot and what not to shoot. Hard to define, the struggle is present every time a project begins. In the end, a 'true' picture reflects the truth and soul of a person. To realize such pictures, I make photo-documentaries rather than single images, because this process takes me through time and creates a more complete story." David Turner is a New York City commercial/fashion photographer. David started his career in Milan, Italy, shooting features for top fashion magazines. Later he joined Fairchild Publications that publishes W Magazine and Women's Wear Daily. Living and working in NYC, David does numerous assignments for major commercial clients around the world. David is currently the Sr. Photographer for Hearst Magazines that publishes Harpers Bazaar, Esquire, and Seventeen Magazine, among others. His recent assignments include Donald Trump, Sean Combs, Nicole Kidman, Damon Dash, and Tommy Hilfiger. Douglas started his career at Look and Life Magazines in the 60's and 70's "golden age" of photojournalism. Student Open House

David H. Wells is a freelance photographer based in Providence, Rhode Island. Guest Speaker: Lois Greenfield

It is our pleasure to have Lois Greenfield join the Hallmark Guest Lecture Series. Lois Greenfield has been compared with Eadweard Muybridge for exploration of human locomotion, and with Cartier Bresson for capturing the elusive moment. She has created signature images for most of the major contemporary dance companies. Her unique approach to photographing the human form in motion has radically redefined the genre, and influenced a generation of young photographers. Her newest venture has taken her career full circle, collaborating and performing around the world with the Australian Dance Theater in "Held," a dance inspired by her photography in which she shoots the live action as part of the performance. Photographer, writer, and educator, Rick Sammon has published 27 books, including informative technical books and entertaining picture books. Guest Speaker: Vincent La Foret

Tuesday, February 12th
Vincent is returning to be a part of our Guest Lecture Series for the third time. Vincent is a Pulitzer Prize winning National Contract Photographer for the New York Times. At age 30, he has been published around the world in major publications including Vanity Fair, Time, Newsweek, Life, National Geographic, New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Stern and Paris Match. Vincent's work has been recognized in the Pictures of the Year Competition, The Overseas Press Club, The National Headliners Awards, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 2002 he was named by PDN as one of the "30 photographers to watch under 30" and in 2005 American Photo Magazine named him one of the "100 most influential people in Photography." In 2002 he and four other photographers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in feature Photography for their overseas post-9/11 coverage. Vincent is a guest speaker around the world at colleges and universities and is an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

Workshop for High School Photography Teachers with Rick Sammon

On Saturday, February 9, 2008, Hallmark Institute of Photography, a leader in today's education of tomorrow's professional photographer, will host a free day-long workshop with famed photographer and educator, Rick Sammon. This program, entitled "Digital Workflow for the High School Photography Teacher" has been designed specifically for those high school photography teachers who are looking for current and relevant trends for the digital age.

The workshop agenda includes a morning filled with inspiration and education as Rick shares his favorite images from his worldwide travels. There will be plenty of Photoshop tips along the way. The afternoon will feature Good Fun! Good Images! Good Information! Workshop participants will learn how to shoot, enhance, share and print digital images during this action-packed session. Both presentations are certain to produce curriculum ideas for the high school photography teacher to use in their digital classroom. Throughout the day, attendees will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the Hallmark program, featuring its industry-envied educational facilities and equipment. Rick Sammon travels the globe in search of new images. Hallmark is pleased to welcome Andy Marcus, New York City wedding photographer to Hallmark. Andy Marcus turned a small, almost 70 year old family-owned studio founded by his father, Fred Marcus, into a multi-million-dollar business serving the biggest celebrity in New York and the surrounding area. Guest Speaker, Ryszard Horowitz

Jack Reznicki is successful NYC commercial photographer, and current president of the Professional Photographers of America. He will address Hallmark and share images and highlights of his exciting career. Always insightful and entertainingly outspoken, Jack will discuss the importance of the digital imaging revolution. Jack is nationally known for his memorable images of children for clients such as Toys R Us. Jack is a regular speaker at Hallmark and throughout the year, he supports and communicates with Hallmark students and graduates as his time permits. Jack is one of the leaders of our industry, lecturing across the country on a multitude of subjects, most notably on digital technology.

Catherine Hall is a San Francisco based photojournalist, corporate and wedding photographer who will share her diverse imagery. Catherine enjoys creating imagery with all people, from a bride in the Hamptons to Tibetan monks in the Indian Himalayas. Graduating summa cum laude and first in her class at Cal Poly, and studying art history at Oxford University in England, she is a young, fast-rising star in the exciting and diverse imaging world.

Hallmark is honored to have the legendary Jay Maisel kick off the 2008 Guest Lecture Series. With 40 plus years' experience shooting memorable color images all over the world, Jay brings his knowledge, images, and stories for a memorable afternoon at Hallmark. In 1968, Jay purchased a former bank building for his home, gallery and studio in the Bowery section of New York City. Jay's life is filled with unforgettable imagery, many imaging awards and a love of teaching and sharing with budding photographers. The enthusiasm that he began his career with four decades ago still permeates his being today. This will be a day that the 2008 class of Hallmark will remember for years to come.

Just prior to the resident class leaving for their Thanksgiving Recess, this short school week ends with plenty of food for thought as our annual Alumni Roundtable event takes place. A panel of Hallmark alumni from recent years are invited back to Turners Falls for an inspiring day of engaging and enlightening discussion. Students will have the opportunity to ask lots of questions and get a new take on what working life will be like after Hallmark. The business portions of the curriculum start to become more vivid now as students mull over their own plans for June 2008.

Workshop for High School Photography Teachers with Jay Maisel

A free day-long workshop with iconic photographer, Jay Maisel will be held at the Hallmark Institute of Photography on Saturday, October 27th. This program, entitled "Curriculum Ideas for the High School Photography Teacher," has been designed specifically for those high school photography teachers who are looking for new ways to inspire today's high school photography student.

The workshop agenda includes a morning filled with fascinating and inspiring images that will have audience members viewing photography, and the world around them, like they never have before. The afternoon will feature an insightful look into the creative process behind the success of Jay's advertising, editorial and corporate communication images. Both presentations are certain to produce curriculum ideas for the high school photography teacher to use in their classroom. Throughout the day, attendees will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the Hallmark program, featuring its industry-envied educational facilities and equipment.
